What Is Corneal Cross-Linking?
Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a treatment utilized at Erdey Seacry Eye Group to slow the progression of corneal thinning, or ectasia, induced by conditions such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration and other corneal disorders. CXL treatment involves the combination of riboflavin and ultraviolet light, which, when properly applied to the eye, can strengthen the bonds between collagen fibers within the corneal tissue. While effective in slowing the thinning and weakening of corneal tissue, CXL does not correct vision, cure the underlying eye disorder, or alter the shape of the cornea.
If you've received a diagnosis of a disease or disorder resulting in corneal tissue thinning (ectasia), contact our Columbus, OH facility for a CXL consultation. Our doctors will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine if CXL treatment would be a beneficial addition to your treatment regimen.

How Is Corneal Cross-Linking Performed?
Prior to your treatment, advanced technology will be used by your eye surgeon to map your corneas, identifying areas of deterioration and assessing the severity to create an optimal treatment plan. CXL can be combined with other methods to strengthen corneal tissue. During your treatment planning, you will be informed about all available options and how to manage your eye condition after CXL.
During the CXL treatment, you will rest comfortably on your back. The procedure is performed one eye at a time, with your treated eye held open using a small device that does not cause discomfort. For most patients, the epithelium layer of the cornea will need to be removed initially to facilitate better penetration of the riboflavin drops into the corneal tissue. Following this step, a specialized machine will emit ultraviolet light into the eye while the doctor carefully administers the riboflavin eye drops.
